Celebrating the life of
Mary D. McClure
June 23, 1926 - August 11, 2024
Mary D. McClure, widow of James A. McClure passed away August 11, 2024 at home. She was born June 23, 1926 in Hartford, CT, to the late Frederick F. and Mary Wallace Dorman. Mary and Jim lived and worked in the Hartford area for 40 years before retiring to The Landings in Savannah GA. She was a champion golfer and bridge player and loved helping people and animals in need. She and Jim traveled the world and she was a faithful and avid writer of cards and letters to all the friends they made on their journeys. She never met a stranger and had a saucy repartee that kept everyone laughing. Getting people together and having fun was her specialty. Fiercely independent she was sharp to the end and walked at least a mile daily. She was also predeceased by her sister Eleanor Scott and brother-in-law Francis Scott. She is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. There will be a memory party at The Social by Thrive later. Funeral arrangements are private.

Mary was a unique character, able to share joy whenever she was present. She will be deeply missed. Maybe she is enjoying time cavorting with Jim now.

Mary and Jim were the most incredible aunt and uncle a little girl – and a grown niece --could have asked for. Warm and generous, they showed me early the definition of unconditional love. Mary had a few loves beyond Jim; a close second place was her treasured black lab, Mealy, with whom we played hide-and-seek in the woods of Bloomfield in the 1960’s. Mary was also a lifelong bird lover, and taught me as a child to identify the birds of New England from her kitchen window, where we would watch the birds enjoying her care at her multiple bird feeders. She loved bird watching well into her 90’s, with a feeder and birdbath on her little patio outside her living room. And everyone who knew Mary well knew she was entertained for a lifetime by the newspaper comic strips, with her very favorite being Charles Schultz’s Peanuts. I will forever associate Snoopy and Woodstock with my dear Mary. May she now rest in peace, with her Jim and her Mealy.

I volunteered at The Village Library with Mary at The Landings. Her quick wit was always a delight! She served the library 14 years or more and always had fascinating stories to tell, most especially of her travels with Jim. She’d send me clever cards in the mail for no special occasion, just thoughtful thinking of you kinds of things that would bring a smile. The red hat picture you’ve chosen to accompany her obituary suits her SO WELL, full of sass and merriment. She’ll definitely be missed.

Mary was one of my favorite people in Savannah. We played bridge together and with Jim, too. I treasured her friendship and I will miss her so very much. I also admired her and tried to emulate her qualities.
